- How did the fur trade start?
- Long before all the Europeans had arrived in Canada, it was just the First Nations. If the First Nations wouldn't be able to get something by them self they would trade. They would trade all different types of stuff, from furs to food. Think about it like this... when you are at the store and you need to get something you have to buy it, so what you do is, you would give the lady/man your money and she/he gives you what you needed, that is technically called trading. Only back then they didn't have money so they would trade something else like fur. First Nations and people now are very similar!
When John Cabot came back to England from his journey in 1497, he told the english people that Canada has a great supply of fish off the island of Newfoundland. Soon, many english people came to Canada to fish. Later on when they went ashore to dry their fish they met the Beothuk, Mi'kmaq, and the Wolastoqiyik. These First Nations decided they wanted some of the Europeans iron goods that they brought with them, so they traded their animal furs for them and got the iron goods in return. Sooner or later the Fur Trade began.
